Financial statements and analysis on a desk at a Ventura County CPA practice

Financial & CPA Services

The licensed CPA foundation: tax, accounting, financial leadership, and the attestation work only a CPA firm can sign.

What do CPA financial services in Westlake Village cover?

The regulated core: tax planning and preparation, accounting and outsourced CFO work, audit and attestation, SOX 404, and payroll and transaction tax compliance. What groups them is the licence. These are the engagements where a filing has to survive examination, a financial statement has to be relied on by a lender or a board, or a report can only legally be issued by a licensed CPA firm.

Every engagement in this pillar rests on a single fact: CPA financial services in Westlake Village are only as good as the licence and judgment behind them. This is the regulated core of the practice, tax filings that have to survive an examination, financial statements that lenders and boards will rely on, and attestation reports that, by law, only a licensed certified public accounting firm can issue.

What makes this pillar different from the accounting office down the road is what sits above it. The same person who signs your financial statements has spent fifteen years as a CFO and Corporate Controller inside technology companies, and holds CISA, CISM, CDPSE and CCSE alongside the CPA licence. So the tax and accounting work is informed by how the numbers are actually produced (by the ERP, the access controls, the close process) rather than by whatever lands in the trial balance at year end.

SOX 404 Compliance

Scoping, control design, testing and remediation for Section 404, including the first-year programmes that decide whether year two is manageable.

SOX 404 support

Who these CPA financial services in Westlake Village are built for

Three profiles account for most of the work here.

Closely held companies between $2M and $150M in revenue that have outgrown a bookkeeper but do not need a national firm. They typically arrive with a working chart of accounts that has accumulated fifteen years of one-off additions, a close that takes three weeks, and a bank or investor asking for something the current process cannot produce on time.

Companies approaching a regulatory or transactional event, a first audit, a lender's covenant package, a Section 404 requirement following an IPO or a de-SPAC, a buyer conducting diligence. These engagements are deadline-shaped, and the work is as much about sequencing as about accounting.

Individuals with business-connected returns, owners, executives with equity compensation, and families whose personal filing cannot be separated from an entity return. The firm has filed these in Los Angeles since 1986.

What sits inside this pillar

Five service lines, each with its own page. They are distinct engagements, though they frequently run together: a company that needs SOX 404 support almost always needs the accounting function tightened first, and a company preparing for its first audit usually discovers that its sales and use tax position needs attention before the auditors find it.

How the work is scoped and priced

Compliance work (returns, payroll filings, a monthly close) is quoted as a fixed annual or monthly fee once the volume and complexity are known. There is no reason for a tax return to be billed by the hour when the scope is predictable.

Project work (a first-year SOX programme, a close remediation, an attestation engagement) is scoped after a short diagnostic. That diagnostic is not billed. It exists because the honest answer to "what will this cost" depends on things neither of us knows in the first conversation: how much of the control documentation already exists, whether the general ledger reconciles, whether the ERP can produce the evidence an auditor will ask for.

One constraint worth stating plainly. Under AICPA independence rules, a firm that performs an attestation engagement for you generally cannot also perform certain non-attest services for you. If your situation triggers that, you will hear it in the first conversation and before an engagement letter exists, not halfway through the year.

Where this pillar connects to the rest of the practice

Financial and CPA services are the base tier, not the whole picture. The controls that make a SOX programme work are the same controls that a IT general controls audit tests. The close that a fractional controller stabilises is the same close that finance automation can then take from three weeks to five days. And the financial statements produced here are the ones a buyer's diligence team will eventually take apart.

That is the argument for keeping the tiers under one roof: the handoffs are where engagements usually go wrong, and there are no handoffs.

Financial & CPA Services: common questions

Not answered here? Ask Javed directly

Do I need a CPA firm, or will an enrolled agent do?

For tax filing alone, an enrolled agent is a legitimate and often cheaper choice; enrolled agents are federally licensed and can represent you before the IRS. Several firms serving Ventura County work on exactly that basis.

The distinction becomes real the moment you need something signed. Audited or reviewed financial statements, an agreed-upon-procedures report, a SOC 1 or SOC 2 attestation; these can only be issued by a licensed CPA firm. If a lender, investor, board, or enterprise customer is going to rely on the output, you need the licence.

Can you take over mid-year from our current accountant?

Yes, and it is common. The transition takes about three to four weeks for a company of ordinary complexity. The sequence is: obtain prior-year returns and workpapers, reconcile the opening balance sheet independently rather than accepting it, identify anything filed on a position we would not take, and agree a corrected go-forward calendar.

The one thing worth not rushing is a mid-year change during an open examination or an in-flight audit. In that case it is usually better to complete the event first.

How quickly can you produce financial statements for a lender?

If the books are current and reconciled, a compilation can be produced in days. A review takes two to four weeks; an audit takes considerably longer and cannot be compressed meaningfully, because the procedures themselves take time.

The realistic constraint is almost never our capacity; it is the state of the underlying records. Where a lender deadline is tight, the first conversation should be about which level of service actually satisfies the covenant, since companies frequently commission an audit when a review would have met the requirement.
